Between
dwelling and agriculture
At
the beginning of the 20th century this district had a great importance
forasmuch as it was the place where the cattle were taken to be
transported in train to the neighbouring country, Chile. At present,
tourists can visit the corrals used for this purpose in “Blanco
Encalada”, a disaffected railway station
Las
Compuertas is today a mixture of residential and an agricultural
area. The vineyards and the introduction of important fruit trees
decorate the piedmont landscape. It is an example of the great
economic impulse that the visionaries gave to the old Colonial
Mendoza.
The
Roundabout of the Pioneers
This
small public space, inaugurated in 2004, is located on the Provincial
Road 82. It is a small square-museum built to pay tribute to the
first farmers who pioneered in the area.
We find tools of the time, a small “bordelesa”, a
manual water pump, a mill that raises water from the drain and
waters two rows of Malbec grapevines, and a parchment with the
names of the traditional district families from the 40’s
and 50’s. There is also an image of District Patron Saint.
"San José", which is honoured by the people every
March 19th (the District’s day).
"The
Viewpoint" Park
This
park was recently inaugurated on route nº 82. Five “Churrasqueras”
(used to cook the typical Argentinean “asado”) were
built, as well as seats and tables for the visitors.
Surrounded
by autochthonal fauna, the two main traditional religious beliefs
were preserved: the Cross of the "Christ Friend" and
the entrance to the “Gauchito Gil” grotto. It
is a great pleasure to observe the beautiful landscape in the
four cardinal points: vineyards, mountains and hills.
